Kilifi

Kilifi: Rutile, Ilmenite and Zircon

Summary

The Kilifi mineral sands project is one of four titanium mineral sands exploration licenses held by Tiomin along the Coast Province of Kenya. The Kilifi property covers an area of 107.2 square km and is located within 10 km of the deep water harbour at Kilifi. The property is adjacent to existing power lines and a paved highway. The deposit is a large dune of Magarini Formation containing economic heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and kyanite. Two drilling programs were carried out at Kilifi between 1996 and 1997, comprising 127 reverse circulation drill holes and 13 deep holes. In 2005, Snowden Mining Industry Consultants ("Snowden"), at the request of Tiomin, carried out a resource estimate for the project. Snowden reported an indicated resource of 809.7 million tonnes (Mt) averaging 3.2% Total Heavy Metal (THM) and an inferred resource of 148.4 Mt averaging 3.4% THM.

Exploration History

A reverse circulation drilling program was undertaken by Tiomin following the completion of the Mambrui program in September 1996. Following this campaign, a deep drilling was performed on the site to test some high-grade mineralized zones intersected in the first phase of drilling. The holes reached the base of mineralization at depths varying from 30 to 100 m. The deep drill holes confirmed the higher grades in the northwest area of the deposit and also provided a better definition of the orebody.

Geology

The geology of the area consists of a succession of sediments and sedimentary rocks, running in zones roughly parallel to the coastline. The Kilifi deposit forms a prominent ridge of Magarini sands that extends throughout most of the coastal strip at a distance of a few kilometres inland. The mineralization covers an area of approximately 10 km north-south by 2 km east-west. The western flank of the ridge is steeper and has been eroded in places into deep alcoves and gullies. Bright red sands comprise the uppermost part, and overlie yellowish-white sands that show trace of bedding.

Mineral Resources

Snowden carried out a new resource estimate for the Kilifi mineral sands project in 2005. The mineral resource estimate has been carried out for (THM), ilmenite/hematite fraction, non-magnetic fraction and the valuable heavy minerals: ilmenite, rutile and zircon.

Snowden has reviewed the estimate in line with the NI 43-101 requirements in order to apply a resource classification. The Table below provides the classified mineral resource figures for Kilifi. Note that the contained mineral tonnes reported for each grade field are based on the % of the total tonnes (including slimes). For example, the indicated THM tonnes reported are 3.22% of the total 809.7 Mt.
